When you know, you know. Right?
Well, that’s exactly how things felt when I talked with Channing for the very first time planning her maternity photoshoot.
She was expecting her third baby and wanted to take pictures this time that honored her whole family and how special this pregnancy was.
She told me she explicitly didn’t want one big glamorous photoshoot that just makes her look like a goddess of a pregnant woman. In other words, no big flowy dresses, no full-fledged hair and makeup, and definitely not 1000 solo shots. She’d be missing her favorite people – the kids who made her a mama and the husband that raised them with her.
So naturally, she reminded me a lot of myself. Whenever we had baby showers, we always did them with all of my husband and I’s friends and family because making it through the newborn phase was an all-hands-on-deck affair. And even pregnancy too! Sure, I was the only one carrying the physical baby, but if I was nauseous and tired you better believe everyone suffered, lol. My husband, kids, and our extended friends and family picked up extra tasks and took such good care of me because there’s no way I could survive that kind of exhaustion all on my own.
Planning A Personalized Maternity Session
All this to say, Channing and I were determined to plan a maternity photoshoot that was fun for the whole family.

As we got planning, it became clear a family ice cream date near their hometown would be the perfect place for our photos.
And honestly, ice cream or not, my goal is for your family to be in a place where you’re genuinely comfortable and feel like you can unwind in front of my lens. Because when we’re all having fun together, you can just sort of forget about the photos being taken and get to focus on giving your kids all your attention. And that kind of presence is the true secret to making your photos look beautiful.

When we got there, of course, we started off with grabbing our ice cream, and boy did they dig in!
Letting the Kids Have Fun During Maternity Photos
But you know the best part? After the ice cream the kids just got to be kids. They explored the shop, danced around, pretended to grab a soda and chug away, and just had fun.
Meanwhile, mom and dad sat at a booth and watched the fruit of all their hard work just unfolding before them. Having those moments to relax are a key feature of every maternity photoshoot of mine. In a season when your body is working over-time, photos should absolutely NOT be another exhausting activity. I want you to be able to feel comfortable physically and emotionally.

And really, every photoshoot of mine strives to allow parents to unwind like that. With how much preparation we do beforehand, I really aim for photo day to be an opportunity for your family to just have a family date. I’ll guide you and step in when needed, but for the most part we all just get to hang out together and there’s nothing kids like more than that kind of presence.
We got to wrap up by stepping outside, taking a walk downtown, and finishing off with some pictures of just baby #3 and mom.
